About Us

We serve children, their families and communities through women’s microfinance projects, improved access to clean water, provision of health care, investment in local schools and athletics, and promotion of sustainable farming for food security and better nutrition. Partnership at both the individual and community levels create lasting change.

Our Mission

Options for Children in Zambia works to improve relatively neglected healthcare needs in rural African communities to improve quality of life.  Specifically, Options is pursuing a novel strategy that utilizes oral health prevention as a catalyst to promote other healthcare and quality of life-improving services to low-resource rural communities.

Kerry Maguire, DDS, MSPH

Kerry Maguire, DDS, MSPH

Chair, Options for Children in Zambia.

Kerry Maguire, DDS, MSPH is Associate Clinical Investigator and Vice President for Clinical Operations at the Forsyth Institute in Cambridge, MA.   She serves as the Director of ForsythKids, a school-based prevention program serving over 2500 children in sixty sites throughout Massachusetts. Dr. Maguire holds adjunct faculty positions at Harvard School of Dental Medicine and the University of Washington School of Dentistry.   

Dr.  Maguire completed her dental degree at the University of Colorado School of Dentistry in 1988 and earned a certificate in Advanced Education in General Dentistry the following year.  In 1993, she received a Master of Science in Public Health from the University of Colorado School of Medicine. She has experience in dental education and industry, having previously held positions at the University of Colorado School of Dentistry (1989-1996), Colgate Oral Pharmaceuticals (1996-1999), Tufts University School of Dental Medicine (1999-2003) and Tom’s of Maine (2003-2009).

Dr. Maguire is the general dentist representative on the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Board of Trustees (2014-2020).  She is active in the American Association of Public Health Dentistry and the American Dental Association, among other national and international organizations dedicated to oral health and health access.

Director, Options for Children in Zambia

Tembo retired from many years as a practicing dentist in Livingston, Zambia. He has many connections in the Zambian government.

More than forty years ago, Temba, D71, graduated from Tufts School of Dental Medicine and embarked on a career his American classmates could not begin to imagine. He returned to his native Zambia to work as that African nation’s first dentist.

Tembo, also holds a master’s degree in public health from the University of Michigan, he is a nationally respected advocate for preventive health and access to care.

Florence is an educator who served as head of a girls’ school in Livingstone, Zambia. Presently she is working as an advisor to the Zambian Ministry of Education.
Donna Golemme

Donna Golemme

Director, Options for Children in Zambia

Donna is the Executive Director for Operations at Tufts University. She is also a beading artist and co-owner of BeadCache, a retail beading business in Mansfield, Massachusetts. Donna considers being able to re-introduce bead-weaving techniques to the creative and talented women of Muchila has been the opportunity of a lifetime. The vibrancy, talent and passion of these women to work hard and produce amazing handcrafted creations to generate income has been nothing short of inspirational.

Board of Directors, Treasurer and Assistant Clerk for Options for Children in Zambia

Rich is an entrepreneur and co-owner of BeadCache, a retail store in Mansfield, Massachusetts. Rich has been involved in both the commerce and the dental missions at Options for Children since 2009. In addition to his work instigating Muchila’s beading micro-finance project, Rich has also worked to provide supporting sterilization services to the village dentistry mission, and coordinated the construction of our birthing/dental center in the village of Muchila.

Fundraising Program Manager, Options for Children in Zambia

Tammy is the newest addition to Options, joining the team as Fundraising Program Manager. In this role, she engages with Options’ partners, serves as the organization’s administrator, is responsible for overseeing all fundraising functions, organizing events, developing donors, grant writing, raising awareness, implementing a variety of marketing strategies and promotional campaigns, stablishing good relationships with staff, members of the public, and the media, and supports the Director and Treasurer.

Her passions lie in global health and development, and making the world a better place for children in any way possible. Before joining Options, she volunteered for the Charles River Community Health Center in the development department, she also worked as marketing research program manager at Purchased where she managed various time-sensitive projects, managed day to day consultations with client teams on project progress and results, developed and monitored project schedules and resource allocations, worked with clients and partners to manage project schedules and research design requirements and kept track of and managed funds spent on rewards for survey participants.

Tammy received her B.A., summa cum laude, in Psychology and Organizational & Management from Pine Manor College. M.S in Marketing from Lasell University and M.S in Nonprofit Management with a concentration in Project Management from Northeastern University. She is currently finishing her M.S in Global Studies & International Relations with a concentration in Global Health & Development from Northeastern University.

Thomas P. Stossel, MD (In Memoriam)

Board Member, Options’ Co-Founder, Director and Secretary

Thomas Stossel was the Co-Founder of Options for Children in Zambia, and Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School, American Cancer Society Clinical Research Professor and Senior Physician, Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He was a hematologist with accomplishments in cell biology research, a discoverer of gelsolin, inventor of BioAegis’ technology estate, and Chief Science Advisor to BioAegis Therapeutics, Inc. His interest in international health was nonexistent until he married Options’ Chairperson, Kerry Maguire. He became a devout believer in community service and was proud to be an honorary Zambian with appointments at the Zambian Dental Training School and University of Zambia’s University Teaching Hospital.

Tom was the holder of over 40 patents and author of more than 300 papers, studies and reviews. He was also a member of The National Academy of Sciences, The American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the National Academy of Medicine, the Editor-in-Chief of Current Opinion in Hematology and Past Editor of Journal of Clinical Investigation, Past President of the American Society of Hematology, and the American Society of Clinical Investigation.

Dr. Stossel was educated at Princeton University and Harvard Medical School, trained in internal medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital and in hematology at Boston Children’s and Peter Bent Brigham Hospitals.
